Manilow Radio to Rocket 99.5
Bravo Mic Communications, LLC - Press Release

June 15, 2006

Las Cruces, NM- Bravo Mic Communications announced the demise of its one-of-a-kind Barry99.5 format today. Manilow Radio, All Barry All The Time, has been replaced by rocker KXPZ, appropriately named The Rocket. “We got great response but now it’s time to get down to business,” said Mike McKay, Executive Vice President of Bravo Mic Communications. Hits like “Mandy” and “Copacabana” have been swapped for tunes like Tool’s “Vicarious” and Rob Zombie’s “American Witch”. Listeners will hear a few older favorites from Metallica and Led Zeppelin, but the focus will be on modern rock. “We looked very carefully at the market and decided there was a hole for this type of format in Las Cruces, ” said Rocket Program Director KC Counts. “We actually came up with the name for the station before it was even for sale. With a name like The Rocket, what else could we do?”

And what’s with the call letters KXPZ? Think- X Prize. Plus, with the Rocket Racing League along with the very exciting future of commercial space travel happening right here in Southern New Mexico, America’s birthplace of the rocket, they fit perfectly. And the Rocket will be in the center of it all. And that extends to the advertising community. “This format is an excellent demographic complement to 101 Gold (oldies KVLC, 101.1FM)” explained General Manager and Executive Vice President, Mike Smith.

The flip may sound good to rockers in the area, but what does Barry Manilow think about it? “Barry’s so hot right now, he may not even notice. Regardless, he was so gracious when he got word of Manilow Radio, he even personally recorded imaging for us. It was a tribute to one of the great musicians of our time and we’ll miss Barry99.5,” said Counts.
